Solar PV and battery storage in Beverley

The job

A homeowner in Beverley came to us with rising energy bills and everything the house used being drawn straight from the grid. They wanted solar PV, and enough battery storage behind it to make proper use of what the panels generated rather than exporting most of it during the day and buying it all back again at night. We looked at the property, the roof and the way the household actually used its electricity, then designed the system around that.

What we did

We recommended a 6.5kW solar PV array with 23kW of battery storage, designed in house so the panels, inverter and batteries were specified to work together as one system rather than as separate parts. We organised the whole job from start to finish. That included running a new armoured cable from one side of the house to the other to feed the installation, mounting the panels on the roof, running the DC cables from the roof down to the inverter, and installing the inverter and batteries on the outside wall in a tidy run. Once everything was wired in we commissioned the system and checked it was generating and storing as designed. The work took two days on site.

The result

The system was up and running the same week, and produced 11kW in its first half day during commissioning. Since then the household has been using around 90% of what it generates rather than sending it to the grid, which is exactly what the battery storage was sized to do. Day to day that means the panels cover the house while the sun is out and the batteries carry it through the evening, so far less electricity is being bought in.
